Victory for commish: Diaper-changing tables for all

Miami Herald

It took 14 months, but Miami Commissioner Frank Carollo finally delivered his victory.

It was not a political campaign. Carollo, the proud father of a 2-year-old girl, fulfilled a promise to raise enough private donations to install changing tables in public restrooms in the city of Miami.

"We invest so much money in our parks and municipal buildings but there was a segment of the community that was lost," Carollo said at Isles Fern Park in Allapattah. "There are mothers and fathers and even grandparents grandmother, they have to find creative solutions when it comes time to change a diaper."

The lack of changing tables was evident not only in the men's toilets, many municipal parks also lacked these facilities in the women's restrooms. For example, none of the bathrooms in the Isles Fern Park, 2200 NW 11th St., have changing tables.
