    Take My Scholarship, Please

If you're reading this, you're so lucky my daughter isn't in high school.  In 11 years I’m going to be super competitive for my daughter’s sake.   If I hear of a scholarship I won’t be sharing the information. The less other kids who apply the better.  Luckily for parents of high schoolers now, I will pretend the sharing is caring lessons of Barney really did sink in. If your...read more...

    My Doctor's Note

    Toddler Humor (Guaranteed Laughs)

I went to a birthday party last week and there was a clown.  Ziggy the Clown.  He was totally toddler friendly.  A regular guy in Hawaiian shorts, a clashing shirt, suspenders and, smart clown he was, no clown makeup.  This meant my child could sit on the floor in front of him, and not 40 feet away with her head burrowed in my shirt. He told them his favorite foods:  chicken nuggets, French fries, cake and...read more...
Gifted Shmifted. It’s so overrated. | Moms Miami

    Gifted Shmifted. It’s so overrated.

So many parents ask, “is my child gifted”?   I say, you should hope not.   Gifted is so overrated.   Look at me. I’ve been in gifted programs since the second grade – before they were even cool – and now, I am a 38 year old single mom living with her mom.   But I’m not upset. I’m doing a lot better than many of my gifted childhood peers. Gifted means that,...read more...
YOU'RE DOING WHAT!?! (or You do that and I'll kill you myself) | Moms Miami

YOU'RE DOING WHAT!?! (or You do that and I'll kill you myself)

My daughter wants a motorcycle.   Whenever we see someone on a motorcycle be it a picture-perfect Venezulean on a Vespa or a tourist couple on two wheels who I’m sure are over the legal weight limit for an elephant, she says “Mom I want a motorcycle.”   She's only 3 but I already get chills thinking about it.   Like parents everywhere I don’t want my child to make dumb...read more...
    I don't need this. | Moms Miami

    I don't need this.

Being a mom there’s a heck of a lot doing what I need to do rather than what I want to do.   I want to stay at the park and talk to my friend while my child plays with hers, but I need to leave because my child has hit a totally random kid even after I told her not to 3 or 4 times, and now I need to teach her a lesson by leaving.   I want to keep watching the Princess and the Frog even though I’m...read more...
Making my Resolutions and Checking them Twice | Moms Miami

Making my Resolutions and Checking them Twice

My resolutions have gotten me behind in everything.  I haven't even completed my holiday cards yet. Actually, I haven't started them.  I'm too busy making my list of what I need to change about myself. Reducing procrastination is #9.   Not yelling so much is #19. Getting the cat fixed is #45 even if Penelope doesn't understand why he is "broken" Cleaning the kitchen table runs a distant...read more...
Receiving IS better than Giving | Moms Miami

    Receiving IS better than Giving

I look at my new Publix $25 gift card and while visions of pre-heated roast chicken and 2 for $5 bags of goldfish dance in my head, I think to myself, receiving is much better than giving. (As a note I’m Jewish so we’ve started the gift giving already).   This $25 card means lunch for Penelope for a week and a bottle, I mean box, of cheap wine for mom.   Sadly though the silver lining is tarnished.  ...read more...
The things I wish I’d done differently | Moms Miami

The things I wish I’d done differently

In three years I’m afraid I’ve done a lot of damage to my daughter.   And isn’t it crazy when you can look back and see the exact moments   you made those decisions.    Hopefully some mom out there can learn from my mistakes.  I'm sure they could. Letting my mom give my daughter a Princess shirt.   It started with one and that indicated to my mom she could now add 6 more to...read more...
    Redefining Milestones | Moms Miami

    Redefining Milestones

I remember all the milestones I waited for: turning over, holding head up, getting teeth, first word, crawling, walking, jumping...   And now I realize there are a whole lot more.  They're not in any book.  They're the ones that make my three-year old most proud.  She's really proud she can jump, that is a big one for her, and for the book too.  But she is just as excited about putting on...read more...
