"Does your wife have a military background?" someone asked my husband recently. We all had a good laugh about that, since anyone who knows me would think that that could be true, but it isn't. I just completed a year of volunteering my services as the director of a new drama program that I created with another mom at my daughter's school. I did this professionally in NY, before my kids were born and we moved to...read more...School Business Partnerships Work for Everybody | Moms Miami //MomsMiami.com Member: carylfantel School Business Partnerships Work for Everybody
I was nominated for Broward County Business Partner of the Year! My daughter's school called today to tell me they nominated me. Pretty cool, huh? I never even knew there was such an award! If you don't know about business partnership programs (I know Broward has them and I assume they exist elsewhere), they are just what the name indicates: a business forms a partnership with a public school and they help support each...read more...Posted on: Feb 20 2009 - 01:05:00 AMMomsMiami Get-Together | Moms Miami //MomsMiami.com Member: carylfantel MomsMiami Get-Together
It was great seeing everybody who came out for tonight's moms' night out! Thanks to everybody who shlepped to Coral Springs to be part of this fun event. Here's a shot of our fabulous Charlene with the featured bloggers who came. The live music by two incredibly talented students from two of Ft. Lauderdale's arts magnet schools was amazing, and so were the guest speaker, the wine, the snacks and the Valentine's...read more...

Walk, drive, beg, borrow...but GO SEE "Miami Bombshells, The Musical" at Actors' Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre! We went last night, without knowing in advance that all the real "Bombshells" on which this play is based were going to be there! What a delight it was to see and hear their true stories that all of us can relate to, and to meet these courageous women after the show. Creating a new musical...read more...Posted on: Jan 29 2009 - 10:00:00 AMThere's Nothing Like Live Theatre | Moms Miami //MomsMiami.com Member: carylfantel There's Nothing Like Live Theatre

My kids don't even go to Taravella H.S., but this Coral Springs school has an outstanding arts program, and now their marching band is the only h.s. band from all of Florida chosen to play at the upcoming Presidential inauguration...but they still haven't raised all the money they need to do it! This is the time when we all say goodbye to the old year and hello to the new one. My family had an additional goodbye this week: our beloved Aunt Flo passed away. At 87, my aunt had had a long, full life, but for the past 6 years she had serious health issues, and, though her death this week was a true blessing, it was still a loss for our family. Since my dad was her only sibling and she had no children, my brothers, my parents...read more...When Do We Get to Rest? | Moms Miami //MomsMiami.com Member: carylfantel When Do We Get to Rest?
We’re getting closer to the finish line – school is winding down, the holidays are next week, and we’re almost done with the last of whatever gift-buying we’re doing this year. On top of all this, today is my husband’s birthday. Poor him! He has spent his whole life with a birthday that doesn’t get much attention, since it’s a week before Christmas, and it usually falls around Hanukkah, too....read more...Carolers Get You into the Traditional Holiday Spirit | Moms Miami //MomsMiami.com Member: carylfantel Carolers Get You into the Traditional Holiday Spirit

Was there this much violence in our schools when we were growing up? Sure, there were the school bullies and general trouble-makers most of us steered away from at all costs. But I don’t recall there being anywhere near the amount of school violence we’re hearing about today. There were at least three school-related homicides/deadly-weapon incidents in Broward and Miami-Dade this past week. No one, no school is immune....read more...Now comes the tough part | Moms Miami //MomsMiami.com Member: carylfantel Now comes the tough part
Whew! After all the revelry last night and today, we are so relieved to have the election behind us. Aside from all the media coverage, how could we tell it was over? Our mailbox was empty today – and I can’t remember the last time that happened! No more political mailings, with politicians slamming their opponents and embarrassing themselves. And no more TV ads doing the same. Unless you really aren’t paying attention, you’ve seen this year’s election ballot, which includes a bunch of proposed amendments for us to vote on. Once you’ve read them, you’ll probably say what everyone I talk to says: Are they purposely trying to confuse us?! I thought there was a movement in recent years to make amendment language more "user-friendly." First of all, these are the longest...read more...The True Spirit of Atoning | Moms Miami //MomsMiami.com Member: carylfantel The True Spirit of Atoning
Whether or not you’re Jewish, you can recognize the true spirit of Yom Kippur today. How? Today is Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement for the Jewish people. Most people know little about Yom Kippur except that many Jews fast on this day “to atone for our sins.” But do you know what really helps us atone for our sins more than not eating for a day? Apologizing. Yes, in the week between Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new...read more...Why Women Should Vote: A MUST-READ History Lesson | Moms Miami //MomsMiami.com Member: carylfantel Why Women Should Vote: A MUST-READ History Lesson
This is from an email making the rounds -- and I've checked plenty of sources. It is true. It's not a pretty chapter in American history, so, unfortunately, this is the first that too many of us have learned about it. Please share it with others, especially your children who are old enough to understand it and appreciate what our foremothers sacrificed so that all of us who followed would have the right to have our vote...read more...
Do abstinence-only mandates work for teens? | Moms Miami //MomsMiami.com Member: carylfantel Do abstinence-only mandates work for teens?
This issue has been in the national news and at the forefront of discussions for families with teenagers across the U.S. more than ever lately. Discussion and the dissemination of correct information are vital to preventing teen pregnancies. However, many states, including Florida and Alaska, do not allow discussion or any teaching about contraception in schools. This is archaic policy and, as the numbers prove, detrimental to the...read more...Michelle Obama for President! As I sit here writing this, I’m listening to Michelle Obama address the Democratic National Convention, and I couldn’t be prouder to be an American woman. What a bright, articulate, passionate and community-minded woman Mrs. Obama is. It’s official: UF is the biggest party school in the country. And that’s where our daughter just started college! Unless you live under a rock, you heard the recent news that the University of Florida has taken over the top spot as the biggest party school, according to The Princeton Review . They’re a pretty respected source of information on all things “college.” Actually, our daughter’s a...read more...We Didn’t “Get No Respect” from Idina Menzel & the Parker Playhouse | Moms Miami //MomsMiami.com Member: carylfantel We Didn’t “Get No Respect” from Idina Menzel & the Parker Playhouse
We went to see Idina Menzel on her “I Stand” tour last Friday. Most of the tour shirts simply have a huge “I” on the front, so that should have given us the first clue as to how much of a diva we were about to experience that night. The lack of respect for the audience at the Parker Playhouse last week by both the management and the headline performer is not to be believed, but most insulting was the fact...read more...Using Technology to Keep in Touch | Moms Miami //MomsMiami.com Member: carylfantel Using Technology to Keep in Touch
I finished my last blog, about taking our daughter to college, by mentioning how thankful we are for Skype, and I promised to explain more this time. We took our daughter to college this weekend. The whole experience has been surreal. She’s doing great. She’s meeting people, finding her way around campus, and liking her classes. It’s me who needs time to get used to the change. For the past couple of months, every time I looked at a baby, I cried. I cried for the baby whose heartbeat I remember seeing on my first sonogram and whose movements I felt inside me. I...read more...It’s My Birthday! Today’s my birthday…and I really have to think about how old I’m “turning!” Has that happened to you yet? When you’re a baby, your parents note your age in days, then weeks and months. Then, when you’re old enough to do it yourself, you’re constantly telling everybody how old you are – while always looking forward to the next milestone: “I’m almost four,”...read more...The Family Graduation | Moms Miami //MomsMiami.com Member: carylfantel The Family Graduation
She did it! Or, should I say, we did it?! Our daughter graduated from high school last night, and I can’t help but think of all the work that went into this accomplishment. She graduated with honors – 11th in a class of almost 600, and draped in awards she’d earned from her many contributions to her school and our community. She worked very hard to get where she is. But getting to this point doesn’t...read more...Trust | Moms Miami //MomsMiami.com Member: carylfantel Trust
Trust. It’s something we deal with every day, in practically every aspect of our lives, but especially as parents. Whether it’s dealing with leaving our baby in a sitter’s care for the first time, allowing our elementary-aged child to be driven to a party by a friend’s parents or to go to a classmate’s house after school, letting our high-schooler be driven to events by other students, or watching our...read more...The race to the end of the school year | Moms Miami //MomsMiami.com Member: carylfantel The race to the end of the school year
The big race is on! No, I’m not talking about the Derby – that was last Saturday, and it was over in minutes. The race I’m talking about is the one to finish every school project, every after-school program, every everything! Within the final 6 weeks of the school year, parents, as well as our kids, are running from school (and work) to academic competitions, play rehearsals and shows, teacher appreciation...read more...Prom Update: What are today's kids doing to celebrate? | Moms Miami //MomsMiami.com Member: carylfantel Prom Update: What are today's kids doing to celebrate?
If your prom was held in your high school, then I guess that makes you a dinosaur, like me. When I was in high school, we had prom committees who worked in the cafeteria every day after school for months, painting backdrops, archways, and everything else that could get hung up to disguise our gym. That’s where our big dances were held -- in our smelly gym -- and we all thought they were magical. We waited for somebody to ask...read more...So, you're getting a divorce... | Moms Miami //MomsMiami.com Member: carylfantel So, you're getting a divorce...
It's terrible – that moment when you realize your marriage is over. Ending a marriage isn’t easy, even if you’ve been through a lot. Usually, you’ve spent months or even years feeling like something isn’t right, but most of us are too scared to think about what life would be like if we separated to actually take that step and say that the partnership just can’t work. Is “Love You Forever” the only classic you’ve read recently? Sure, it’s good, and every person I’ve ever mentioned this book to says they’ve cried every single time they’ve read it, no matter how many times that’s been. Unless you’ve taught your child to drive a car in South Florida, you probably haven’t thought about how impossible that is to do. Growing up in Upstate New York, we had lots of country roads and big parking lots in which to practice driving. We’d get our learner’s permit (at 16, mind you, not 15, as in Florida) and our parents would head out to a wide-open area, slide over and let us take the...read more...
